Birch Lane: Story System

A scalable content solution that invites the consumer into the essence of the brand: life on the lane.

The Why:

Birch Lane is more than a classic furniture retailer—it’s an open door to life on the lane, where a like-minded community shares a modern ethos for reimagining tradition and adding magic to every day. It’s a strategic reflection of the Birch Lane consumers’ actual lifestyles, but they weren’t seeing themselves within our brand—and we were losing them to competitors. As the Head of Content for Birch Lane, I knew we needed a content solution that conveyed “life on the lane” at every touchpoint, and empowered our team to communicate myriad stories while pushing a wide lens of product efficiently—season after season.

The Articulation:

Our consumers already lived on the lane, but we hadn’t done the most important thing: invite them in. I created a global story system that welcomed them into our world and offered a helping hand at every interaction, all so they could easily achieve the essence of life on the lane: joyful living.

Joyful living is grounded in the idea of “celebration”—whether it’s a big traditional holiday or a small happy moment, celebrating what matters most inspires everyday joy—especially at home. The story system is anchored in a primary hero campaign called “Celebrate”, which houses all priority seasonal merchandise while encouraging our consumers to join us in celebrating the joy of every season. Our secondary hero campaign “Come Home To” became the vessel for priority curations, providing exposure for evergreen products while tapping into the core emotion of life on the lane: a place you can’t wait to come home to.

A series of franchise stories support the campaigns and activate key categories while continuing to invite through language that establishes a sense of place. “Talk of The Town” houses all trend content and merchandise, “Company’s Company” covers entertaining, “New to the Neighborhood” exposes new arrivals, and “Weekend Project” offers the helping hand our consumers craved through how-to content, exactly when they worked around the house (on the weekends).

Every single campaign and franchise story received its own branded visual identity and template system, simultaneously improving consistency and reducing time spent on the production of hundreds of assets season after season.

The Response:

Not only did the system successfully  invite consumers into our world, but it became a vehicle adopted by cross-functional teams across product, marketing, and creative. Each season, we used the system to organize all product exposure and content, significantly increasing go-to-market alignment and efficiency.
